A learned client of ours asked a question, and we felt that this is also the concern of many and hence we wish to share. This myth has to be addressed, or the mirror will never get to see the day of just.
“When I was little, my mum once told me not to break a mirror or bad luck will be upon me for 7 years. Is it true? Will I have bad luck for seven years if I break a mirror? Asked Angie.
With a loud laugh, I answered her: “the reason your mother warn you is because she wants you to be careful when you are carrying the mirror or cleaning the mirror. If one will have seven years of bad luck when breaking the mirror, what will happen to all the workers working in the mirror factory? Forever they will be surrounded by bad luck as they break mirrors every day and maybe by the time it is for them to meet God, they still owe many years of bad luck.
One has to understand why there are many folklore in our Chinese culture and many people regardless their education level, they still fall into them.
In the ancient time, many people are not educated, so what can be done to teach them in the shortest time?
Fear is introduced in cultivating a specific desirable behaviour. Stories of bad luck and misfortune were told and spread in the population, and over time these stories have deeply embedded into our culture become part of our education and passed down from generation to generation.
Another folklore that will resonate with many is, you must not have the mirror facing your bed, or your soul will be sucked into the mirror while you are asleep, and you will never ever wake up again.
The real reason for not having a mirror in front of your bed is that you may scare yourself when you wake up in the middle of the night. No soul will be lost.
Quote of the day:
Diligence is the mother of good luck.
